Comics created for the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is a creative outreach tool designed to explain transportation projects in a clear, engaging way.
Developed with the help of my team at VHB, it uses storytelling and visuals to simplify complex topics like road improvements, safety, and multimodal planning, making technical information more accessible to the public and encouraging community understanding and involvement.
Each book included information pertaining to various roadway safety topics, activities such as crosswords or coloring pages, and a collector card that gives information about each hero with recapped safety tips.
The Process.
Characters within the comics were either conceptually designed from a previous issue (pictured above), or created from scratch when the topic hadn’t been covered yet.
Following the approved design and based on the topics of interest that the client wished to express within the comic, a storyboard was formed and sketched out.
Following another review confirming the storyline and message behind the comics is what the client desires, we then proceed with the lineart phase and coloring shortly after. My partner on this project assisted with text bubble placement and the activities portion of the activity books.
